Abstract
This study was conducted, between May, 2004 and May, 2006 at three interrelated farms belonging to the Gyeongnam pork brand, in order to estimate cross type effects derived from three different types of terminal sires on growth and meat quality traits of 432 commercial pigs. Yorksire¡¿Landrace(YL F1) sows, Duroc(D), Birkshire(B) and Birkshire¡¿Duroc(BD F1) terminal sires were used for the crosses, YL(¡Ï)¡¿B(¡Î)(25 heads), YL(¡Ï)¡¿BD(¡Î) (20 heads), YL(¡Ï)¡¿D(¡Î) (25 heads), and B(¡Ï)¡¿D(¡Î) (10 head) were analized for meat quality. As results of growth traits analysis, average daily gains (30kg¢¦90kg) were 0.915¡¾0.017kg(B¡¿D), 0.783¡¾0.018kg(YL¡¿B), 0.838¡¾0.018kg(YL¡¿BD) and 0.814¡¾0.015kg(YL¡¿D). Ages to 90kg were 134.47¡¾2.903 days(B¡¿D), 157.58¡¾2.309 days(YL¡¿B), 149.11¡¾3.067 days(YL¡¿BD), 155.41¡¾ 2.656 days(YL¡¿D). For meat qualities, pHs(Loin) of YL¡¿B, YL¡¿BD, YL¡¿D were 5.52¡¾0.038, 5.72¡¾0.027 and 5.67¡¾0.035, respectively and water holding capacities(Loin) were 63.26¡¾2.977%, 68.10¡¾ 2.645% and 61.14¡¾3.328%, repectively. The YL¡¿BD cross was better than others. The ratios of unsaturated fatty acid were 60.65¡¾1.042%, 60.56¡¾1.346% and 57.64¡¾1.648%, reepctively in the YL¡¿B, YL¡¿BD and YL¡¿D crosses. The YL¡¿B and YL¡¿BD crocess were higher than other crosses.
In conclusion, the YL¡¿BD cross shows better growth performance than other crosses. Moreover, the cross shows superior results for meat quality in comparison with other crosses. Consequently, the YL¡¿BD cross using BD F1 as a terminal sire could be suggested as a novel method to produce better commercial pigs.
